When Are Chiropractors Like Electricians?

Most Chiropractors have a reasonable understanding of the nervous systems.

In fact the foundation of Chiropractic is about how the nervous system influences your body and casues problems in your joint, muscles etc.

Some Chiropractors expand their knowledge hugely, applying the principles of Functional Neurology and Clinical Neurosciences to help you get better.

These Chiropractors are often using the same kind of logic an electrician might to figure out where your problems are so they can figure how to help you.

Where Is Your System Starting To Fail?

To help you get out of pain, get healthy and living a life again, we have to figure out – what’s going wrong? What’s stopping you functioning well? Where are the faults?

The whole of your body, your joints, muscles, ligaments, skin, organs and other soft tissues are all full of sensors. These sensors send signals up to your brain and your brain uses these signals to build maps of your body, to help it work your body. If there’s a problem with the signals in, then there’s likely to be a problem with the way you are able to move. That can lead to problems.

Every muscle in your body has about 10,000 inputs from all over your body, some switching it on and some switching it off. If the inputs turning the muscle off are dominant, you won’t be able to use that muscle as well.

Muscles can get turned off for many reasons. If your body is turning off a muscle to correct a balance problem or protecting  a tight or injured area from further harm, that has consequences on your ability to function well.

Looking at this way, the electrical system that lights your house is analogous to your nervous system.

One of our important  jobs is to look at you like an electrician checking out all the wiring and appliances in your house trying to find the problem.

When your lamp at home doesn’t work, what series of checks do you need to do?

  1. Check the lightbulb and check the local switch.

Is your body working normally? Are there weak muscles or signs of mechanical stress or abnormalities of blood flow, sensation, pain or inflammation?

  1. Check the cord, plug and socket.

Could you have a nerve trapped in your body? Trapped nerves give sensation of burning, aching, dripping, numbness, pins and needles.

  1. Check the ‘trip switches’.

Part of what we do is look at the pattern of weak and strong muscles in your body. A weak muscle for us is analagous to the trip switches blowing on the fuse box. Like we said, each muscle has a nerve from your spinal cord and has 10,000 inputs, from all over your system, some turning it on and some turn it off. A muscle won’t turn on if it has more inputs turning it off that turning it on. A muscle is often turned off to help protect other areas of the body from damage.

  1. Is the local substation affecting the power in your local area?

Are the subconscious connections controlling power and fuel supply between your brainstem and spinal cord etc. working well?

  1. Is it the transmission substation or major powerlines to your locality?

Is your brain connecting to your senses and are the different areas of your brain working and networking well and able to send signals out?

  1. Is the problem at power station? Power stations convert different types of energy to generate electricity.

In the same way your nervous system converts energy from sensors in your joints, muscles, ligaments, fascia, skin, organs, eyes, ears, nose and mouth into electrical signals that help power your system.

  1. Is it the National Grid network control centre that has a problem? The national grid has 2 control centres: one to make sure enough power is generated and the other checks the power network to each area.

Are you making the conscious choices to generate good health? Is your brain able to deliver fuel and power to the right areas of your body?

Your body is an electrical system.

Between the sensors in your skin, joints, muscles etc. generating the signals in your nervous system and your conscious awareness of what’s happening, there are mutiple levels of ‘substations’ in which the information gathered, can be altered or processed.

So even though you might feel there’s a problem in one place, it might in fact  be being influenced by multiple other parts of your system.

That’s why, unless someone is looking at your problems properly, it’s hard to find the underlying cause.

That’s why standard care techniques often don’t get great results.

If you’re just dabbling with the symptoms and not tackling the root cause, the benefits won’t last.

That’s why a thorough assessment and course of treatment at Back-in-Action with one of our Chiropractors is likely to be your best move.
