Torticollis

An acute spasm of the muscles (dystonia) of the cervical spine, resulting in a painful neck, commonly locked in a twisted position.

Evidence based summary for manual therapy

We are unaware of any high quality evidence suggesting the benefits of chiropractic care for Torticollis specifically, however there is evidence of effectiveness for mechanical neck pain.

However to date, the Committee of Advertising Practise (CAP) accepts that the holistic approach that chiropractors take, they may claim to treat general aches and pains including muscle spasms and cramp. From a manual approach chiropractors use exercises and a variety of soft tissue release techniques and often work alongside massage practitioners. Some chiropractors also use acupuncture/ dry needling.

Back-in-Action clinical comment

Various theories exist as to the cause of torticollis, which include tight joints, trauma, associations with recent dental work, posture, basal ganglia disorders, bruxism (grinding teeth) and recent sinus infections.

By performing a thorough history and examination, we aim to establish a clear picture of the possible causes of the problem and establish if the treatment options we are able to offer, are appropriate or whether a referral to another health practitioner would be more beneficial.

In our experience treating the symptoms and underlying causes that sustain the symptoms of torticollis is more effective with a combination of treatment techniques. Our approach often incorporates spinal manipulation, mobilisation, muscle release techniques, neck exercises, referral for massage therapy, diet and nutritional advice, functional neurological exercises, cryotherapy (heat and/or ice), postural improvements, ergonomic advice and relaxation counselling.
