An important part of the chiropractic assessment is to check the movement and position of the joints. Restriction in the movement of the joints can cause pain around the area and compensations in other regions of the body. Chiropractors use motion palpation to check the movement of the joints. The joints are taken through their range of movement whilst the chiropractor feels the joint with a light pressure from their hands. Often a joint might feel okay to the patient but if restricted it will feel tender when pressed. Mobilising a joint can sometimes itself have benefits but usually chiropractors find that various corrective techniques which introduce a higher velocity are required to help restore the normal movement. Exercises and other advice to help maintain the improvement are also often suggested.
